What is yoga?

Most simply put, the physical aspects of yoga are mindful stretching with coordinated breathing. So if you can breathe and pay attention (with some guidance, of course!) you can do yoga. You don’t even have to be flexible, as most people think. What you will gain is flexibility, strength, equanimity, presence, and much more!

I have 200-hours of training in the Kripalu tradition, and have an “experienced” designation because I’ve taught over 1000 hours and even more than that number of students in styles and intensity–ranging from restorative and gentle to flow and power yoga. While I love both teaching & attending large group classes, there is nothing like the personal attention one receives in a private yoga session, and therapeutic yoga can be especially helpful if you have chronic pain, are wanting to heal injuries, and/or have specific goals.

My 500-hour certification is in the Viniyoga tradition, with training focused on yoga therapy. My specialty is working with beginners, and those with physical, mental, and/or emotional limitations. So even if you know nothing about different yoga styles, if you are feeling apprehensive about whether you can do yoga, or are wondering whether yoga can really help, that’s OK. No experience or confidence is necessary! Some of the specific conditions I have worked with include:

  • MS and auto-immune conditions
  • Sciatica and lower back pain
  • Depression & anxiety
  • Body image issues
  • Digestive challenges
  • PTSD & trauma

What can you expect?

Just as yoga was taught in the past, working one-on-one with a teacher you trust means that:

  • Together you’ll set specific goals—ones that work with your busy life & motivate you to continue.
  • You’ll learn which specific postures & modifications are best for where you are now, as well as for what you’re trying to achieve.
  • If you’ve been diagnosed with a particular medical condition & your doctor recommends you try yoga, you can feel safe to explore any physical, mental, & emotional boundaries in a personal setting. (Group classes may or many not be appropriate for you–please tell a group class instructor of any conditions you may have so they can help guide you!)
  • You’ll gain a better understanding of how to take care of yourself in larger classes (if you want to do them), & receive other useful feedback along the way.

My goal is for you to leave feeling relaxed and good about yourself, with a valuable practice you can do consistently without a lot of time or effort.

Thankfully, Kali spends a lot of time outside of the yoga studio getting her class prepared for the upcoming week. Honestly, every week the class was different. You will like some weeks better than others but it will always be interesting and stimulating. The instructors that do the same class week in and week out gets boring. My posture and flexibility did improve….

I was 43 years old and I did not have great posture and was not that flexible so a part of me was hesitant in taking up yoga. Kali put me right at ease and told me that I was the perfect individual to start yoga since it can help my posture and increase my flexibility.
